I’ve never seen Farrell invest so much in a character
I mean, yeah, he’s wearing a fat suit, but you’d never know it. His attitude, his body language, his voice, all of it, makes you immerse yourself in the character and see only the Penguin. It has nothing to do with the other live-action TV Penguins, Burgess Meredith or Robin Lord Taylor.
This is a New York gangster, an intelligent guy
He’s a Scorsese gangster but without the florid language. The story is simple, similar to Lord Taylor’s Penguin on the CW’s Gotham. The Penguin is a middleman in a gangster organization.
Up in the world
Up until now, he’s been doing his time, slowly working his way up the gang ladder, and then, with the aftermath of the Riddler blowing up the city’s seawall and the death of his boss in that movie, he sees an opportunity to move on. Now the cross, double cross and, I think, triple cross game begins. Very fun and highly recommended.
